Glossary of Common Police Terms
Annual LeaveOne or more days off work. What anybody outside the police force would call a holiday!
Copper, Bobby, Gavver, Fed, Plod, Old BillAssorted nicknames for a police officer. I am sure you can think of more!
Fed, theShorthand for the Police Federation.
'Nick'- The police station (as in, "I'm going into the nick for a cuppa").
- The act of arresting someone (as in, "I've nicked this one for theft, sarge").
PCSOPolice Community Support Officer.
RefsShort for 'refreshments'. Also known as a meal break.
Rest DayA day when you are not rostered to be on duty.
Rest Day in LieuA rest day which you've been given to keep things fair. Usually because one of your rest days fell on a bank holiday.
