Glossary of Common Police Terms

Annual Leave

One or more days off work.  What anybody outside the police force would call a holiday!

Copper, Bobby, Gavver, Fed, Plod, Old Bill

Assorted nicknames for a police officer.  I am sure you can think of more!

Fed, the

Shorthand for the Police Federation.

'Nick'
  1. The police station (as in, "I'm going into the nick for a cuppa").
  2. The act of arresting someone (as in, "I've nicked this one for theft, sarge").
PCSO

Police Community Support Officer.

Refs

Short for 'refreshments'.  Also known as a meal break.

Rest Day

A day when you are not rostered to be on duty.

Rest Day in Lieu

A rest day which you've been given to keep things fair.  Usually because one of your rest days fell on a bank holiday.

'Special'

Short for Special Constable (more info about Specials here)
